Sunrise - Waterloo Cricket Clubs merger...

Waterloo Cricket Club has a long and distinguished history as part of the City of Waterloo sports community. Evidence of this can be seen on the Southern Ontario Cricket Association trophy itself, which displays Waterloo Cricket Club as the Southern Ontario Cricket Association champions of the years 1914 and 1922.

Sunrise Cricket Club, though only six years old, is a name associated with success and performance. During the past six years, they have won numerous trophies and championships with their most recent success occurring when they were crowned 2003 Southern Ontario Cricket League champions. Therefore, the club executives see this as a merger of history with emerging growth.

On 29th January 2004, both club executives met with each other and finalized the merger proposal. The highlights of the meeting were the following. The new name of the club was approved as “Waterloo Sunrise Cricket Club”. Waterloo Sunrise Cricket Club also decided to have two teams represent it in tournaments. One team will be named “Waterloo Sunrise Cricket Club – Browne”. The second team will be named “Waterloo Sunrise Cricket Club – Rowe”. The former is to commemorate the late founder of Sunrise Cricket Club. The latter is to commemorate the late president of Waterloo Cricket Club.

Although Mr. Art Browne had limited cricket knowledge, his esteemed contributions to Sunrise Cricket Club cannot be expressed in words. The members of Sunrise Cricket Club see Mr. Art Browne as the father of the club and want to keep his memory and vision alive. Therefore, they decided to name one team Waterloo Sunrise Cricket Club – Browne.

Mr Bert Rowe was the late president of Waterloo Cricket Club. He also served as the president of Southern Ontario Cricket Association and Ontario Cricket Association. Mr Rowe was himself an accomplished cricketer. He was an authority in planning and team management. Therefore, as an honourary title, the second team name was chosen as Waterloo Sunrise Cricket Club – Rowe.
